Jitsu wa Watashi wa...Review

Full Review

Pro: Charming, "Fungly" art style

Con: Too dang short, Mid-series enjoyment slump (2-3 episodes)

Final Thoughts: I did not have much time to chew on my thoughts on this show after its initial airing. However in this case I want to keep my reactions as fresh as possible to give a concrete reason as to why this is a charming little series. It’s good but not great. While most people turned to Snow White with the Red Hair this summer 2015 season I went with this one and stuck to it longer. It may come across as a big clichéd romcom turn off for some, but stick with it and it may surprise you.

Story: Typical Rom-com scenario from the late 80s GO!

1. Spineless male lead

2. Beautiful girl he is in love with is his number one

3. Either one happens to be a vampire, alien (aka: fantasy/magic scenario)

4. Several other girls fall in love with him producing conflict

5. Still chooses his number one girl in the end

You may think judging by that list that I would be hating on the series for utilizing the base components of a typical rom-com but I fact quite the opposite. The series does use the base components but builds up the charm and likability by not banking on concept alone to keep the audience interested. There is a lot of subjective somewhat crude comedy to be had and for a series to pull it off as good as this series is very rare. I would welcome a second season despite the slump the series has midway. (Spoiler: it’s because of the principal)

Characters: Asahi our main protagonist is not all the interesting but I would not call him annoying or completely forgettable. The best parts that come from him is when he obsesses over the littlest things dealing with Youko. For example: once Youko tells him the romantic meaning of a vampire's bite he is all like "OHHH I want to get bit by her!". Youko is portrayed as incredibly dense but is still very cute and enjoyable to watch. The class president puts up a good fight for Asahi's affections but does so in a subtle genuine way that made her much appreciated from the typical forceful romantic rival. Shiho's "special secret" could have been made into good use but the anime never takes more than one episode of the comedic advantage. Instead it goes for the typical hentai character with nothing much else. However there is never a moment when characters fall flat. Many grow on you and get much more respect by the end of their run (Akemi in particular).

Art: It is often described as "fungly" (Ugly but fun) and it lends itself to some great comedic expressions and gives the series a much needed "edge" to grow on. The animation is standard but it never hurts the series or lends its way to experimentation like Hyouka per say.

Sound: The opening and ending theme are damn catchy and they fit the series rather well!

Final Score: 3 stars
