Mini Review
Pro: Animation/art are ok, takes risks, cool characters designs except for Tatsumi
Con: I hate the main character, having characters die does not=a good story

Final Thoughts: It’s embarrassing to see how hard shoenen anime/manga tries to get noticed these days. Nowhere is that more obvious in this series known as Akame ga Kill! I am not saying its the worse shoenen ever but it is one of the more recent ones that tries to come across as edgy and new but in reality its all the same shoenen tropes and concepts disguised by character deaths. A LOT of character deaths. Unlike other recent shoenen like Blue Exorcist, Akame ga Kill! focuses more on appearing edgy for the audience/readers than actually creating a meaningful story and characters. This is no more painfully clear than with our main protagonist which ISN'T the girl with the red eyes and interesting backstory. Instead it’s with a male cut and paste shoenen protagonist that does nothing for me. That is why the shoenen ideas in Blue Exorcist do not seem as cliché. Kazue Kaito (creator of Blue Exorcist) was more focused on creating a character she loved rather than trying to appeal to her readers. In some cases that is all it takes to appeal to audience, show that you love what you are writing. The creator of Akame ga Kill! kills off characters within a drop of the hat which makes many deaths seem meaningless. Akame ga Kill! has some neat ideas and characters floating around, but does nothing original with them. Instead it seems set on getting readers/watchers to take a peak rather than open the box. The character designs are great and the animation is decent, but blood and death does not a good anime make.
Final Score: 2 stars
